BBMRI-ERIC

Graz, Austria

General information

BBMRI-ERIC is a research infrastructure (RI) of biobanks and biomolecular resources. It currently consists of 19 Member States and one international organisation (IARC), making it one of the largest RI in Europe. BBMRI stands for Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure. Since 2013, it operates under the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) legal framework.

Expertise

The BBMRI-ERIC Negotiator is a service that provides an efficient communication platform for users requesting samples and/or data. It facilitates and simplifies the communication steps necessary to obtain information on the availability of relevant samples/data, especially from multiple biobanks across Europe.

Technologies offered for the Open Call

- BBMRI-ERIC Directory and BBMRI-ERIC Negotiator to identify biobanks that have relevant biological material, associated data and services
- Access to biological samples and associated data
- Access to additional services of biobanks (e.g. sample hosting, omics data generation and analysis)

Once the availability of the service is negotiated for the particular purpose, the service is directly provided by the particular biobank.

Additional resources offered for the Open Call

BBMRI-ERIC headquarters can support requesters when requesting services from biobanks.

Access modalities

Delivery of physical material (biological material) and associated data. If only data is requested; facilitation of virtual access to data.

These services can be provided by more than 500 European biobanks, available via the BBMRI-ERIC Directory. Step 1: Researchers are invited to identify biobanks of potential interest in the BBMRI-ERIC Directory. Step 2: Researchers then proceed to request the availability of the desired resources by clicking on “Go to sample / data negotiation” via the BBMRI-ERIC Negotiator (the BBMRI-ERIC headquarters can help in this process if needed). After access conditions are negotiated, the request for biobank services shall be filed to ARIA, together with requesting services of other RI.

Scientific and technical requirements

In general, access to human biological material and associated data presupposes a scientifically relevant project and ethical approval. Details may differ from country to country and are typically specified in the respective biobank’s access policy.
