Branchiostoma lanceolatum

Branchiostoma lanceolatum - Amphioxus

Description
Branchiostoma lanceolatum has an interesting phylogenetic position as a non-vertebrate chordate and a relatively simple and evolutionarily conserved morphology and genome structure compared to vertebrates. Spawning can be induced and the embryos are transparent. Amphioxus is used to research the evolution of the chordate genome, Hox cluster structure and cis-regulatory elements, the control of axial patterning in chordates, and vertebrate-specific structures such as the head.
